There is nothing like the warmth and radiant heat of a woodburning stove. It does not care whether the ice storm took the power lines with it, and it will heat a room past the point where a furnace has given up.
It does ask something of you in return: a place to keep dry wood, a flue that is right for the stove, and the willingness to build a fire.

Gas stoves
A freestanding gas stove may be the easiest way to provide radiant warmth to your home. They can be installed very close to the wall and require little or no floor protection, which makes them a fit for rooms where a wood stove never would be.
You get the look of a stove and the heat of a stove without hauling anything in from outside.
